Client Overview
Management Controls is a leader in oil and gas resource management, providing innovative solutions that empower major players in the industry, including clients like Exxon, Shell, and other major gas companies. Their software helps manage complex resource allocation and operational workflows within the oil and gas sector.
The Challenge
Management Controls needed a complete redesign of their existing application, which was a complex and highly specialized tool used by some of the largest companies in the world.
The company initially tried to build internal design resources, but struggled due to a lack of experience in handling a project of this magnitude.
The internal UX manager lacked the necessary qualifications and experience to successfully lead such a significant redesign, prompting Management Controls to seek an external partner with expertise in managing complex UX projects.
Our Approach
- Complete Application Redesign
IIIMPACT took on the challenge of completely redesigning the complex application. We focused on improving the user experience for operators managing resources across large-scale projects, ensuring the interface was not only powerful but also intuitive and easy to navigate. - Immersion to Rapid Redesign
We began with an immersion phase to deeply understand the intricacies of the oil and gas industry and the specific challenges faced by Management Controls' users. From there, we moved into a redesign phase, ultimately delivering a transformed interface of over 100 screens within just six months. - Design System Creation
We also developed a complete design system to provide consistency across all screens and ensure that future developments would maintain the same high standards of usability and visual cohesion. - User-Centered Design
By conducting extensive user research and involving stakeholders throughout the process, we were able to create a design that directly addressed the needs of the industry. We prioritized simplifying workflows, reducing cognitive load, and creating a visual language that was approachable yet capable of handling the complexities of resource management.
Method
Our initial engagement with Management Controls began in early 2020. Through a series of intensive product immersion sessions, we became better informed and equipped to understand our client, its target market, and its product line.
During our workshops, we learned more about typical MC user personas and the platform’s primary goals, objectives, and challenges.
Full Immersion
For this project, the IIIMPACT SWAT TEAM worked hands-on in an almost full-time capacity with leadership, product development, and the QA of Management Controls.
Our team was embedded within the MCI team and participated in daily Agile practices. We:
- Built a close professional and personal relationship with the team in all areas.
- Introduced automation and APIs where applicable to aid this process.
- Performed intensive user testing to evaluate UX/UI on various functionalities.

Mobile app and coding
Beyond the web product, we also worked on the platform’s mobile component and included front-end development as part of our offering. Our developers joined the project to evaluate and improve the quality of the code used to build the platform. Our front-end development included (.Net MVC / Angular / React, HTML, CSS).
